ACACIUS (Achaitus, Acacius, also called AGA-TANGELUS), St., Martyr. — Confessor of the faith under the Emperor Decius (250-51); he is often confused with the bishop of the same name from Melitene, who took part in the Council of Ephesus (431). He is also believed, though without proof, to have been bishop of Antioch, which is generally thought to be that of Pisidia.
We know the content of the long interrogation to which he was subjected by the consular Marcianus from the *Acta disputationis Acacii*, a document of good repute but later heavily revised. In the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* the name of A. appears on 29 March, the date of the interrogation, as is clear from the *Acta disputationis*, not that of his death; the *Synaxaria* commemorate him on 27, 30, 31 March and 16, 17, 18 April.
