ACCRESCENCE. — It is the biological problem of the increase in volume of organisms during development. With regard to mammals and man, it occurs in characteristic phases, the study of which, for the human species, is of great value as it is dependent on constitutional habit.
With the activation of the ovum, a first phase occurs in which development without accretion is observed, inasmuch as the egg cell divides into cells (blastomeres) progressively smaller (segmentation phase) until the *morula* stage is reached. The increase in volume of the em-
