HEINRICH BERNARDUS ANDRIAU (ANDLAW). - Catholic political figure and publicist, born in Freiburg im Breisgau on 20 August 1802, died there on 3 March 1871. From an ancient and influential family, in his youth he was influenced by the great bishop Johann M. Sailer. He was repeatedly elected to the Upper Chamber of Baden, where from 1837, opposing the interference of the paternalistic state with Febronian traditions, he championed the autonomy of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the free development of Catholic institutions, especially schools. Socially, he was conservative. He devoted intense activity to organizing Catholic societies throughout Germany, promoting the general assemblies of Catholics (Katholikentage), of which he was often president. He actively contributed to the Catholic press; in 1869, together with others, he founded the Katholische Volkspartei in Baden. His most significant writings include: Über die Stiftungen im Grosshztg. Baden (1845); Offenes Sendschreiben an Hirsher (1850); Der Aufruhr und Umsturz in Baden (1850 ff.); Die bad. Wirren im Lichte der Landesverfassung (1865), as well as the memoirs entitled Gedanken meiner Musse (1859–1861), etc.
