ARAN (so the Vulgate; LXX 'Appáv; Heb. Hàrân 'mountaineer'). — Son of Thare and brother of Abraham and Nachor. Gen. 11:26-29 places him third, reflecting his lesser importance in the history of the Hebrew people compared with the other two. He was the father of Lot. He died before his father Thare, while still living at Ur, leaving his son an orphan; the son went with Abraham to Palestine, and two daughters: Melcha, who married Nachor, and Jescha, who is believed to be the same as Sara, wife of Abraham (Gen. 20:12).
