**ARI THORGISSON** (ARIO, THE WISE, son of THORGILS). — Priest and first Icelandic historian, b. 1067, d. 1148. He wrote the history of Iceland from 874 to 1120 in the *Íslendingabók* or *Book of Icelanders*, of which only the latest recension survives, composed no earlier than 1134. The “editio princeps” was printed at Skálholt in 1688, and the complete Latin version at Copenhagen in 1733.
