AUCHEER, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. — Mekhitarist of Venice, born in Ancyra in 1762, died in Venice in 1854. Ordained priest on 4 January 1786, he served as assistant general of the Congregation for 30 years and, for twenty years, as vicar general, without ever ceasing, for a full 65 years, his intellectual activity.
He wrote: Ascetic and spiritual works, all published in Venice in Armenian: *Sui nostri 4 fini*, 1810. — Hagiographical works: *Vita e martirologio completo di tutti i santi del calendario della Chiesa armena*, 12 vols., according to the Armenian, Greek, Latin, and Syriac menologia, with extensive critical notes on each saint, 1810–15; *Florilegio dei Santi*, 1800. — Patrological works and textual editions: *Cronologia d'Eusebio*, preserved in the ancient Armenian translation, published by A. together with the Latin translation made by him: *Eusebii... Chronicon bipartitum nunc primum ex armeniaco textu in latinum conversum* etc., 1818; *S. Ephrem Evangelii concordati expositio*, 1827. — Linguistic works: a monumental work was the Armenian-Latin-Greek dictionary, called *Haigazian*, of all Armenian culture, 2 vols., 1836.
