BARRANQUILLA, DIOCESE OF. — In the western part of the Republic of Colombia, in the department of Atlántico, suffragan of Cartagena. The episcopal see is in Barranquilla, the departmental capital, situated on the navigable estuary of the Magdalena River. It is the most populous city in Colombia after the capital. Created by Pius XI on 7 July 1932, the diocese has a territorial extent of 3,470 sq. km. and a population of 330,100, of whom 327,428 are Catholic. There are 17 parishes, served by 14 secular priests and 36 regular clergy (1949).
