BASSAITI, MARCO. — Painter, active in Venice in the early decades of the 16th century. Trained under Alvise Vivarini, he was somewhat influenced by Giovanni Bellini and Carpaccio, yet remained essentially a 15th-century artist, so that the reform initiated by Giorgione remained almost foreign to him. Among his works we recall the *Vocazione dei figli di Zebedeo* [Calling of the Sons of Zebedee], his best-known piece, and the *Orazione nell'orto* [Agony in the Garden], both in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice; and the *Madonna and Saints* in the Museo Civico in Padua.
