BEDUIN, CORNEILLE. - Jesuit missionary, born in Gravelines (now in French Flanders, then in the Catholic Netherlands) in 1615, died for the faith at Papigochic (Mexico) on 4 June 1650. He entered the Society of Jesus in Malines in 1635 and arrived in the mission of New Spain in 1647, taking the name Codinez. His apostolate was brief. Sent to the Tarahumara, he was unable to win over the minds of the Indians, who were exasperated by the abuses of the Spanish conquerors and colonists. In an uprising, the missionary, accused even of causing deaths through the administration of the last sacraments, was killed by arrows in the present-day State of Chihuahua. B. is said to have composed a grammar and a Mexican-Tarahumara lexicon, which have not been found.
