BELLARINO GIOVANNI — BELLAY JEAN

Bellarmino GIOVANNI (Bellarmin) — B. at Montepulciano in 1542, d. at Rome on 17 Sept. 1621. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1560 and was professor of theology at Louvain and at Rome. He was created cardinal in 1599 and was one of the most authoritative theologians of the Council of Trent. He was also a zealous defender of the Church against the attacks of the Reformers. He composed numerous ascetical and polemical works, among which are: *Disputationes de controversiis christianae fidei* (3 vols., Ingolstadt 1586-93; many editions), *De arte bene moriendi* (Rome 1620), *De gemitu columbae* (Antwerp 1615), *De scriptoribus ecclesiasticis* (Rome 1613), etc. He also wrote a commentary on the Psalms (*In psalmos dilucidationes*, Rome 1611) and a work on the duties of bishops (*De officio pastorali*, Rome 1629).

BELLAY JEAN (Bellaius) — B. at Faye-la-Vineuse in 1498, d. at Rome on 16 May 1560. He was a French diplomat and cardinal. He was a zealous protector of the Reformation in France and a friend of Calvin. He was created cardinal in 1530 and was a member of the legation sent to Germany in 1540 to negotiate with the Protestants. He was also a patron of letters and sciences.
