BENZINGER, IMANUEL. - Protestant exegete and Palestinian scholar, b. in Stuttgart in 1865, d. in March 1935. In 1898 he became a privatdocent in Old Testament studies at Berlin; in 1912 he was appointed full professor at Toronto in Canada, in 1915 at Meadville (Pennsylvania), and in 1921 at Riga. He was an advocate of the critical school of Wellhausen, later of the pan-Babylonian school.
His principal works include: *Hebräische Archäologie* (Leipzig 1894-1907); *Die Bücher der Könige* (Freiburg im Br.-Tübingen 1899); *Die Bücher der Chronik* (ibid. 1901); *Geschichte Israels* (Leipzig 1904; 3rd ed., Berlin 1924); *Bilder-Atlas zur Bibelkunde* (with L. Frohnmeyer, Stockholm 1905 and ibid. 1913); *Iahvist und Elohist in den Königsbüchern* (ibid. 1921). He edited the *Zeitschrift des Deutschen Palästinavereins* from 1897 to 1902, and K. Baedeker’s *Palästina und Syrien* (from the 3rd to the 7th ed., 1890-1910).
