BERNARDO di S. PIETRO in VINCOLI. — Cardinal of the twelfth century, created by Alessandro III with the title of S. Nicola in Carcere, probably in 1178, and, upon the death of Cardinal Guglielmo, transferred to the presbyteral title of S. Pietro in Vincoli. Celestino III and Innocenzo III entrusted him with important legations toward the end of the twelfth century. Pope Innocenzo, immediately after his election, sent him with his colleague Pandolfo Pisano to Tuscia and Spoleto and, the following year (at the beginning of 1199), alone, to Lombardy, to safeguard—as he did with great authority and learning—the rights of the Holy See in relation to the metropolitans and the communes. He perhaps died in that same year, 1199.
