BERTOLLI, Giandomenico. - Archaeologist, born at Meretto near Udine on 13 March 1676, died at Aquileia on 22 March 1763. He was a canon of Aquileia and zealously and intelligently studied the antiquities of that city, assembling a museum which later passed to the Counts Cassis, forming the first nucleus of the present collection.
He published on the subject a volume that became a landmark, especially rich in inscriptions: *Le antichità di Aquileia profane e sacre, per la maggior parte finora inedite, raccolte ed illustrate* (Venice 1739). He also wrote a continuation in two further volumes, which remained in manuscript until the years of his death. He set an example in the rational use of epigraphic codices. He also published many dissertations in the collection of Calogerà.
