BROCARDUS (BROCARTIS), NIKOLAUS. - Carmelite theologian, born at Sittard on 21 August 1687, died at Worms on 29 September 1760. He taught philosophy and theology in the schools of his Order and at the abbey of St Martin near Trier. He held various offices, including that of Commissary General for his province. He dealt with theological and moral subjects, taking a lively part in the controversies surrounding Quesnel.
He openly opposed Quesnel, attacking him in the work: *Dissertatio polemica de primatu, iurisdictione, infallibilitate et superioritate tam inter quam extra Concilium Generale Romani Pontificis* (Trier 1719). In it, the propositions of Quesnel that had incurred Roman censure are explicitly examined. He also wrote: *De Bulla Unigenitus et multitudine appellationis ad futurum Concilium generale* (ibid. 1719); *Theologia moralis fundamentalis* (Cologne 1735); *Alphabetum morale* (ibid. 1739); *Professio fidei catholicae* (Frankfurt 1758).
