CABROL, Fernando. - Benedictine monk, scholar and promoter of liturgical science, b. at Marseilles 17 Dec. 1855, d. at Farnborough 4 June 1937. He entered the abbey of Solesmes, was ordained priest there on 3 June 1882, and became prior in 1890. In 1895 he transferred to the newly founded monastery of St Michael, Farnborough (England), where he served as prior until 1902 and as first abbot from 1903 until his death.
A member of academies and learned societies, he wrote numerous articles for various periodicals to illustrate the different forms of liturgy, especially the Roman and Gallican. His literary reputation was established by the *Bibliographie des Bénédictins de la Congrégation de France* (Solesmes 1889), followed by the *Histoire du cardinal Pitra*. He contributed much archaeological and liturgical material to the *Dictionnaire d'archéologie chrétienne et de liturgie*, begun in 1903, which, like the *Monumenta Ecclesiae Liturgica* in 4 vols., he published in collaboration with other scholars, Leclercq (v.). Among his other works may be cited: *Etude sur la Peregrinatio Silviana*; *Les Eglises de Jérusalem*; *La discipline et la liturgie au IVe siècle* (1895); *Le livre de la prière antique* (1906), perhaps the most beautiful and effective book for spreading the liturgical spirit; *La prière liturgique* (1901–1902); *Les origines liturgiques* (1906); *Introduction aux études liturgiques* (1906); *L'Angleterre chrétienne avant les Normands* (1909); *La prière pour la France* (1916); *Mon Missel* (1927); *La Messe* (1927); *La prière des premiers chrétiens* (1929); *Les livres de la Liturgie latine* (1930); *La Messe en Occident* (1932); *St Benoît* (1933); and a posthumous work: *The year's liturgy* (London 1938).
