CARGERERI, Stanislao. – Minister of the Sick, missionary in Central Africa. Born at Cerro Veronese on 19 January 1840, died at Bovolone (Verona) on 5 March 1899. He entered the Order of St Camillus in 1851 and was ordained priest in 1862. In 1859, not yet a priest, he had attended the wounded of the battles of San Martino and Solferino, and in 1866 those of Custoza. From 1867 to 1877, together with some of his confreres, of whom he was placed in charge, he assisted Monsignor Comboni in the mission to Central Africa, displaying great spirit of enterprise and organisation.
On his return to his homeland he was superior of the Camillian house at Lille in France and at Roermond in Holland, and held the office of procurator general and later vicar general of his Order. He is credited with the first geographical map of the region of Kordofan, which he had explored in 1870–71.
Cargereri also wrote several interesting reports on the mission to Central Africa.
