CARIANI (err. *Girjathajim*, dual form: “two cities”). — A city northeast of the Dead Sea, in the tribe of Reuben (Jos. 13:19; Num. 32:37). In the time of the prophet Jeremiah, during the decline of the kingdom of Judah, it again belonged to the Moabites (Jer. 48:1, 23; Ez. 25:9). Eusebius (*Onomasticon*, ed. E. Klostermann, Leipzig 1904, p. 112, 15) identifies it with the Christian city of Caraitha, 10 miles west of Madaba. Today it would correspond to Hürbet al-Querjjat.
