CHANTEPIE DE LA SAUSSAYE, PierreDaniel. - Historian of religions, b. at Leeuwarden (Holland) on 9 Apr. 1848, d. at Bilthoven on 20 Apr. 1920. From 1878 to 1899 he was professor at the University of Amsterdam, whence he passed to that of Leyden, remaining there until 1916.
A supporter of the thorough study of every religion, inasmuch as each contains an ethical content, in 1887 he published a *Lehrbuch der Religionsgeschichte*, whose fourth edition was edited by A. Bertholet and E. Lehmann.
