CHARETTE DE LA CONTRIE, Athanase de. - Pontifical and French officer, b. in Nantes on 18 May 1832, of a baronial family related to the Count of Chambord, d. at the château de la Basse Motte on 8 Nov. 1911. After completing his studies at the Military Academy of Turin, he entered the forces of Modena and then, in 1860, those of the Papal States.
As lieutenant colonel of the Papal Zouaves, in 1867 he commanded the third territorial zone (Tivoli and surroundings), where for about a month he successfully resisted the guerrilla incursions of Menotti Garibaldi’s columns, those of Blenio, and others, and after a hard-fought engagement recaptured the important and precipitous position of Nerola (8 Oct.).
