CONTINUS (Le Conte), ANTONIUS. — French jurist, b. at Moyon ca. 1526, d. at Bourges in 1577 (or 1586). Professor at Bourges and later at Orléans. He was particularly renowned for his erudition. He devoted himself actively to the criticism of sources and to the editing of works in the history of civil and canon law.
He assisted in correcting Gratian’s Decree, and the critical edition he produced was published in 1570. Together with other scholars, he exposed the frauds of the Magdeburg Centuriators. In 1571, he arranged the Novellae omitted in Collatio X. He was also the author of an edition of the Corpus iuris civilis, with important notes, published in Paris in 1562 in 7 volumes and in Lyon in 1571 in 15 volumes. In his opinions, he opposed Dumoulin and Hotman, who belonged to the most dominant trend of the French school. His various writings were collected and reprinted under the care of another professor of Bourges, Méridle, under the title: Antonii Contii, Opera omnia, collecta studio Edmundi Merilli (Paris 1616; Naples 1725).
