PAOLO MARCELLO DELLMARE. - Theologian, born in Genoa in 1734 to an Israelite family, died on 17 February 1824. Baptized in 1753, ordained priest in 1758 in Rome, where he devoted himself to ministerial works. He occupied the chair of theology at Siena in 1783, and from 1789 that of Sacred Scripture at Pisa.
During the controversy then raging over the liceity and extent of sacramental intercommunion between the Armenian Uniates and the dissident Armenians, he worked to prevent such intercommunion from extending beyond liturgical calendar communion, defending, for this purpose, the censorship of the University of Siena against the contrary judgment in his publication: *Principes theologiaques pour servir de pré-sevrait contre les erreurs de l'Examen* (Siena 1786). His ignorance of sensism led him to favor and defend the publication of the *Catechismo universale* by Gourlin, 3 vols., Genoa 1779 (placed on the Index on 20 January 1783). He compromised himself far more deeply with the publication of the *Praelectiones de locis theologicis* delivered in Siena, undated, placed on the Index on 9 December 1793 and condemned by the Holy Office on 5 March 1795. In 1817, however, he made a full retraction of his errors.
