DUHLÉ de SAINT-PROIET, Marc-Antoine-François. — Noted French preacher and apologist, b. at Toulouse on 15 July 1822, d. there on 15 May 1897. Ordained priest in 1846, he taught for several years literature and philosophy at the seminary of Esquile.
In 1857 he took his doctorate in theology at the Sorbonne. His doctoral thesis, *Des études religieuses en France depuis le XVIIe siècle jusqu'à nos jours, ou Essai sur les causes qui ont produit dans les temps modernes la splendeur et la décadence des sciences théologiques*, was published in Paris in 1861. In the same year D. began publication of his *Revue de l'année religieuse, politique, philosophique et littéraire*, which continued until 1866. Leaving teaching in 1858, he devoted himself to preaching and met with great success. Notable among his works are his *Conferenze apologetiche intorno alla fede e alla scienza* (1869 and 1870).
In 1875 he was appointed general secretary of the organizing committee for the Catholic University of Toulouse. Two years later (1877) he began his *Corsi apologetici* in the Faculty of Theology; in 1879 he became dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and in 1894 rector of the Institute. His activity also extended to the organization of the International Congresses of Catholic Scientists. His principal work, *Apologie scientifique de la foi chrétienne*, published in Toulouse in 1885, went through several editions and translations.
