Epimanica ("Επιμάνεια, επιμάνικα"). — These are simple mannequins used to fasten at the wrists the ends of the sleeves of the sticharion (alba): oversleeves that do not correspond, as some claim, to the manipulus of the Latins. The epimanica are used not only in the Byzantine rite but also in other Eastern rites. They are a symbol of the power of God and recall the bonds that held the arms of Jesus Christ during His Passion. This ornament was first granted by the emperor to the patriarch, then became the privilege of bishops and was later extended to priests and deacons.
