ESCHOL (eskol «grape cluster»). — Aramaic, brother of MAMBRE, one of the allies of ABRAM who followed him in the raid against CHODORLAHOMOR, king of Elam (Gen. 14, 13-24).
The «valley of E.» (Vulg. *torrens botri*), given the aforementioned kinship with MAMBRE, is to be sought in the vicinity of Hebron (Gen. 13, 18), a little to the north (Num. 13, 23 sq.). Today it is the valley el-Haskeh. The Israelite scouts found there the wonderful grapes which they brought as proof of the fertility of the Promised Land (Num. 13, 24 sq.; 32, 9; Deut. 1, 24).
