EUTROPIUS, St. — Born in Marseilles from a noble family in the first half of the 5th century. He spent a rather dissipated youth, but after his wife’s death he was brought back to better sentiments by Bishop Eustachius.
Having been ordained deacon, he devoted himself with enthusiasm to penance, praying much and fasting often. Upon the death of Bishop Justus of Orange, he was elected to succeed him. He was already bishop in 464, since he is mentioned that year in a letter of Pope Hilarius. He was also in correspondence with Sidonius Apollinaris. He was succeeded by a certain Verus, who wrote his biography. He is commemorated on May 27.
