FABER, EGIDIO (GILLES DE SAEDT). — Theologian and statesman, Carmelite, b. in Brussels c. 1440, d. in 1506. Doctor of Louvain and renowned preacher, he enjoyed the favor of Archduke Maximilian, who later became emperor. He restored the Carmelite College at Louvain and played a significant role in the founding of the Carthusian monastery in the same city.
He wrote a chronicle of the Carmelite Order, of which some fragments survive among the manuscripts of John Bale in the British Museum in London and in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The other works, including a Historia Brabantiae, have been lost.
