FACCIOLATI (Fasolato), Jacopo. - Italian scholar, born at Torreglia, in the Euganean Hills, on 4 Jan. 1682, died at Padua on 26 Aug. 1769. Following his priestly vocation, he obtained a doctorate in theology in 1704. For several years he was professor of Greek, Latin, and theology at the Seminary of Padua, and in 1723 he was called to the chair of logic at the University of Padua. He maintained correspondence with the most illustrious scholars of his time, among others with Lagomarsino, Maffei, Muratori, and Cardinal Stefano Borgia. Among his students and collaborators was Forcellini (q.v.), whom he guided in the compilation of the *Lexicon*.
Among his writings worthy of note are: corrections to the *Collegium* (Padua 1708), *Ortografia moderna italiana per uso del Seminario di Padova* (ibid. 1718), and the expansion of Nizolius’s *Apparatus Ciceronianus* (ibid. 1734), works for which he was assisted by Forcellini; *De optimis studiis orationes X* (ibid. 1723); *Alcosses dialecticae* (ibid. 1726); *Il giovane cittadino istruito nella scienza civile* (ibid. 1740); *De gymnasio Patavino syntagmata* (ibid. 1754); *Fasti gymnasii Patavini* (ibid. 1757); *Viatica theologica* (ibid. 1759; a collection also including earlier writings on the same subject). Some of his commentaries on Cicero enjoyed particular success: the orations *pro Roscio* II and *pro Quintio* (ibid. 1723), the *De officiis* (Venice 1747), and a corpus of philosophical works (Padua 1753).
F. lacked the penetration of the philologist and the broad vision of the historian, but he possessed an innate humanistic taste for classical language, which is particularly evident in his Latin orations. Several unpublished writings are preserved at the Seminary of Padua.
