**FILOMARINO, Francesco Maria di** (Naples). — Theologian and Capuchin preacher, born in Naples in 1598, died on 7 March 1683. Of the princely-scholar family of Filomarino (formerly Filamarino), he professed among the Capuchins on 24 April 1615. He was a respected preacher, lecturer in sacred disciplines, three times provincial minister (1651–53, 1657–60, 1664–67), dean of the consultors of the Holy Office in the Neapolitan Kingdom. He refused the archiepiscopal see of Salerno.
In his *Tractatus de divinis revelationibus duo* (Naples 1675), examining seven propositions from an unnamed visionary, he sets forth the doctrine on public and private revelations, their modes and characteristics, and establishes norms for distinguishing true from false ones.
During the popular uprising led by Tommaso Aniello in 1647, he defended the people against the viceroy and sought to reconcile the opposing factions.
