FOGL, GASTON de. — Duke of Nemours, b. in 1489 from Jean de Foix, Viscount of Narbonne, and Marie of Orléans, sister of Louis XII, d. at Ravenna on 11 Apr. 1512.
At twenty-two he took command of the French troops engaged against the "Holy League" promoted by Julius II. In Feb. 1512, with swift maneuvers, he succeeded in driving the Spanish army from Bologna (5 Feb.) and in retaking Brescia from the Venetians (19 Feb.). On Easter Day 1512, near Ravenna, in a bloody battle, he defeated the Spaniards, but while pursuing them he fell mortally wounded on the field.
