FRANGIPANI, FABIO MITRO. — Bishop of Nazareth, d. March 1587. In August 1568 he was sent by Pius V as nuncio to France, where he remained until 1572.
He strove to induce King Charles IX to wage a more vigorous campaign against the Huguenots, and often found himself in difficulties owing to the ambiguous policy of Catherine de’ Medici. On 5 Nov. 1572 he was appointed Bishop of Nazareth. He undertook other missions to France in 1574 and 1578. In 1585 Sixtus V sent him again as nuncio to France. His appointment was at first viewed with disfavour by Henry III, but subsequently Fabio gained the sympathy and friendship of the king, of whom he became a trusted counsellor.
