BROTHERS OF CHARITY. - A religious congregation founded in Ghent in 1807 by Canon P. J. Triest. The exercise of charity to which the Brothers are devoted is manifested in the care of the sick, the elderly, students, and in the education of youth. Approved by Leo XIII in 1889, the Congregation is spread throughout Belgium, Holland, England, and Canada, with over 1,600 religious in 80 houses.
