IERAMEEL (Hebr. ßerahme'êl). — I. Firstborn son of Herson, grandson of Judah (1 Chron. 2:9, 25 ff., 33-42).
The descendants of I. (of whom T. K. Cheyne has fanciful notions) along with the Cincites and Calebites dwelt in the Negeb; they belong to the tribe of Judah, though of Edomite origin.
The Negeb of I. lay to the southeast of Beersheba, toward the Wadi Rahmah, between 'Aslûg and Kurnûb. In the list of Sheshonq I at Karnak, the names Iurahma and Iurhem appear, which represent the Hebrew I. David led Achish of Gath to believe that he was raiding the Ierameelites (1 Sam. 27:8 ff.), whereas in fact he was sending them a share of the spoil taken from enemies of Judah (1 Sam. 30:29).
2. A Levite of the clan of Merari (1 Chron. 24:29).
3. A prince of royal lineage to whom Jehoiakim entrusted the arrest of Baruch and Jeremiah (Jer. 36:26; Vulg. Ieremiel).
