JANAUSCHEK, LEOPOLD. - Cistercian, born at Brünn (Moravia) on 13 Oct. 1827, died at Baden near Heiligenkreuz on 23 July 1898. He entered the monastery of Zwettl in 1846. He taught ecclesiastical history at the monastery of Heiligenkreuz and at the University of Vienna. Meanwhile, he devoted himself to a major history of his Order.
In 1877 the first volume appeared: Origines Cistercienses, containing the complete and critically compiled list of all monasteries and a full bibliography for each. A brief compendium of the history of the Order, which had become famous, had preceded this work (Vienna 1877). J. however did not succeed in publishing the subsequent volumes, though he left much unpublished material. No less noteworthy is the Bibliographia Bernardina (Vienna 1891). On the occasion of the eighth centenary of the death of St Bernard, he promoted the publication of Xenia Bernardina, in 4 vols. (Vienna 1891).
