It was created by Pius XI with the apostolic constitution *Inter Praecipuas* of 17 January 1927, by separating it from the Diocese of Florianópolis, which was elevated to a metropolitan see by the same constitution, with the church of St Francis Xavier being raised to the status of a cathedral.
