KINGSTON, ARCHDIOCESE OF — City and archdiocese in the province of Ontario (Canada). Erected as a diocese on 27 January 1826, by a division of the archdiocese of Québec, and raised to the status of an archdiocese on 28 December 1889. The ecclesiastical province comprises, in addition to the metropolitan see, the dioceses of Peterborough, Alexandria, and Sault-Sainte-Marie (all in Ontario).
There are 82,000 Catholics in an area of 10,000 sq. km., with a total population of 239,167. There are 46 parishes, 68 churches, 13 convents, 5 hospitals or asylums, 47 Catholic schools, 2 boys' colleges and 2 girls' colleges. The clergy consists of 63 diocesan priests and 27 religious (Jesuits and Redemptorists). The Regiopolis College in Kingston possesses a university charter and is run by the Jesuits; St Mary's College in Brockville prepares candidates for the religious life in the Congregation of the Redemptorists.
