LASA LDE, CARLOS. - Scolopian, polygraph, b. at Portillo (Spain) on 4 Nov. 1841, d. there on 4 Sept. 1906. One of the first Spaniards to write on grammatical studies according to the principles of modern philology; he was also highly skilled in Greek and Latin.
As rector of the College of Yecla, he carried on notable scientific activity, as evidenced by his printed publications. In Madrid he founded the Revista Calasancia, which he edited for seven years. He also contributed to other periodicals and himself published works of a religious, pedagogical and historical character, some of which were printed in Germany. Among his historical works the Historia literaria de las Escuelas Pías de España (3 vols., I Madrid 1893; II and III posthumous) stands out.
