ANDREA GIACINTO LONGHI. — Bishop, born at Campodarsego on 22 Nov. 1853, died at Treviso on 26 June 1936. He entered the Capuchins in 1879, and in 1902 was made provincial minister. Elected Bishop of Treviso (1904), he gave vigorous impetus to Catholic Action, provided sure guidance to social works, and particularly fostered the formation of the clergy through example and doctrine.
During the German invasion of 1917, which devastated part of the diocese, he displayed great courage; after the war he zealously devoted himself to repairing its ruins. In 1923 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Padua, and in 1927 of Udine. Of wide juridical and theological learning, he celebrated a diocesan synod in 1911, and besides various learned pastoral letters and some pamphlets, published: De resurrectione mortuorum (Rome 1904), Il sacerdote alla scuola di Nazareth (Vedelago 1920), I grandi misteri cristiani (Padua 1945, posthumous ed.).
