MALTSEV, ALEKSEJ PETROVIČ. – Russian liturgical theologian and archpriest. B. 1854, d. 1915. Master of Theology at the ecclesiastical academy of St Petersburg; teacher of pedagogy at the ecclesiastical seminary of that city, later provost of the Russian embassy church in Berlin.
He published *The Foundations of Pedagogy* (St Petersburg 1885, Berlin 1895) and a translation of the New Testament (1844–1846) by the poet V. A. Žukovskij from Slavonic into Russian. He wrote several apologetic and informative pamphlets in German on the Russian Church on the occasion of controversies with Catholic, Protestant or Old Catholic theologians. Above all, however, M. is known as translator and commentator of Russian (Slavonic) liturgical books into German, a work carried out in the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th.
