MARIA EFREM OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS. —
Born Luciano Garrelon. Discalced Carmelite,
missionary and bishop, b. 18 or 19 Nov. 1827 at
Casteljaloux (Lot-et-Garonne), France, d. 10 Apr. 1873 at Mangalore (India). Ordained priest (1850), he entered the Order of Discalced Carmelites and professed on 17 May 1855. Sent to the mission of Mangalore, he first worked in the station of Mahé (1860–62) as parish priest, then in the cities of Calicut (1862–64) and Cannanore.
Later he governed the mission of Quilon as pro-vicar apostolic (1856), then as vicar apostolic, appointed on 24 July 1868, with the titular see of Nemesi in partibus, opening many schools and a seminary for the indigenous clergy. He attended, in 1869–70, the Vatican Council and on 3 July 1870 was named vicar apostolic of Mangalore. Returning from Rome, he introduced into that region the Carmelite Tertiary Sisters («The Apostolic Carmel of Mangalore») for the education of girls, and also founded the first monastery of Carmelite nuns of the Second Order.
