MASSIMO III MAZLUM. — Patriarch of the Catholic Church of Antioch from 1833 to 1855. Born in Aleppo in November 1779, died in Alexandria on 11 July 1866. Ordained priest in 1806, consecrated bishop in 1810, he was later elected Patriarch of Antioch and confirmed by Rome in 1836.
Favorable to Gallican ideas, yet sincerely attached to the Catholic Church, he was highly intelligent and energetic. He obtained from Pope Gregory XVI the personal privilege of bearing the title of Patriarch of Antioch, Alexandria, and Jerusalem. M. organized the Melkite community in Egypt. The Melkite Church experienced great development under his leadership.
