Born in Ravenna around 1385. Initially loyal to Urban VI, he served as his legate in Germany, Hungary, and England. Later he switched allegiance to the antipope Clement VII, but upon the death of Urban VI he returned to obedience to the Roman pontiff Boniface IX. He was therefore called the "Cardinal of the Three Hats" (cardinalis de tribus pileis). He repeatedly sought to pacify the Friulian regions, his native land, and was also proposed several times, both by the Carraresi of Padua and by the Republic of Florence through Boccaccio, for the patriarchal see of Aquileia, though he never obtained II. In Padua he founded the Collegio Pratense for poor students.
