There were 23 diocesan priests and 27 regulars; 3 male and 3 female educational institutes (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 320).
The diocese was erected by Pope Pius XII on 29 February 1940 with the apostolic constitution Ad christianae plebis by separating it from the diocese of Trujillo, establishing the church of St Michael the Archangel as the cathedral.
