SALINIS, LOUIS-ANTOINE de. — Apologist. b. 1 January 1798 at Morlaas, d. 30 January 1861 at Auch. After studies at Saint-Sulpice, he soon distinguished himself by his polemical zeal in defence of the Catholic cause. A supporter of Lamennais (v.), he later distanced himself from him following the condemnation.
He was professor of Sacred Scripture at the Athenaeum of Bordeaux and vicar general in 1840. In 1849 he became Bishop of Amiens, and in 1856 was transferred to the archdiocese of Auch, where, to combat Gallicanism more effectively, he restored the Roman rite. A shrewd organizer, even in his youth, together with other eminent figures, he contributed to the foundation of institutions highly beneficial to the Christian direction of culture, such as the *Mémorial catholique*, the *Correspondant*, the *Œuvre des bons livres*, and the *Société des bonnes études*. The spiritualist trend that, under the influence of Cousin (v.), characterized the philosophy of the time, is reflected in his work *Précis d’histoire de la philosophie* (s.l. 1834; 3rd ed. 1847), written in collaboration with Fr. Scorbac. Also noteworthy are his *Mandements* (s.l. 1857) and *La divinité de l’Église* (4 vols., Paris 1865).
