It has a population of 87,468 inhabitants, of whom 87,369 are Catholics distributed across 53 parishes served by 180 diocesan priests; there are 2 classical colleges, 2 normal schools for young ladies, the university faculty of agriculture, and 10 hospitals. The diocese was created by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution *Solerti studio* of June 23, 1951, by separating from the archdiocese of Quebec the civil counties of Kamouraska, Islet, Montmagny, and Rivière de Loup, elevating the church of St. Anne in the city of S. A. de la P. to the dignity and rank of a cathedral. It is a suffragan of Quebec. The College of S. A. de la P. was founded in 1827 by the Rev. Carlo Francesco Poinchard.
