SCHEIDE PAPYRUS, PAPER. — The Greek papyri deposited at Princeton University by the American John H. Scheide consist of 21 sheets, i.e., 42 pages, intact except for the first four, which are halved, and are generally well preserved, from an ancient codex. The handwriting is a fine uncial of the 3rd century, probably from its first half. They contain Ezekiel 19:12–30:29 with minor lacunae. These papyri belong to the same codex as the 16 sheets of Chester Beatty Papyrus IX (v.), containing Ezekiel 11:25–17:21 and Esther 2:20–8:6, and the 13 sheets of Chester Beatty Papyrus X with a portion of the Greek version of Daniel. Therefore, all these papyri are designated by the same siglum Rahlfs 697.
All the pages of the Scheide papyri still bear the original numbering, which runs from 39 to 90 of the complete codex, and allow for an almost exact calculation of the size and material of the codex. They were published in 1938 in a magnificent volume with a comprehensive introduction, text, critical apparatus, and photographs of all the papyrus pages. This is the best and most ancient monographic text of Greek Ezekiel; it confirms the value of the Codex Vaticanus B. Many readings peculiar to the Scheide papyri are found in the Lucianic manuscripts and are rightly attributed to the recension upon which LUCIAN (v.) based his revision.
