THIRAS (Hebrew: Trías). — Seventh of the sons of JAPHETH in the Table of Nations (Gen. 10:2). Like the names of his brothers, e.g., IVAN, MADAI, etc., it indicates some Western people, perhaps Aryo-European.
The comparison has been proposed with the 'Thracians', Opázek (the Targumim transcribe T. as *tarqi*); with the river Túpacs (Herodotus, IV, 11), i.e., the Dniester; with the Túpanyó, or Túpanyó, the 'Tyrrhenians', or 'Etruscans'; and with the Egyptian name *tév-rw-š'*.
