USPENSKIJ, TEODORO. - Born in Nizhnii-Novgorod on 7 Feb. 1845, died probably in Leningrad on 1 Sept. 1928, one of the most authoritative Russian Byzantinists, founder and first director of the Russian Archaeological Institute in Istanbul.
He travelled in Syria, Palestine and on Mount Athos and directed excavations in Bulgaria. From 1914 he was editor of the *Byzantine Review* (*Vizantijskij Vremenik*). He left approximately 250 works in his field, among which stand out a *History of the Byzantine Empire*, a *History of the Crusades* and studies on the Empire of Trebizond, all in Russian. From 1917 he was president of the Archaeological Commission of the Academy of Sciences and in the years 1922-27 professor of Byzantinology at the University of Leningrad.
