VALARISI, Domenico. — Priest and scholar, born in Verona on 13 Nov. 1702, died there on 14 Aug. 1771.
His principal work is the edition of the writings of St Jerome (11 vols., Verona 1734–42; 2nd ed., enlarged, Venice 1766–72, reproduced in PL 22–30), for which he sought out manuscripts in various Italian cities. He assisted Scipione Maffei in the edition of the works of St Hilary (2 vols., Verona 1730) and published a volume of the writings of R. fino (ibid. 1745).
The collection of manuscripts and antiquities that he donated to the Museum of Verona was criticised by Baretti for a supposed inscription that he had illustrated, concerning the saints Fermo and Rustico.
He held several canonries and was appointed by Benedict XIV as a reviser of the Holy Office for Oriental languages.
