WARSAW, ARCHDIOCESE OF — Cardinal Stefano Wyszynski, Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw, was deposed and interned by the communist government of Poland on 26 September 1953.

At Rostków near Przasnysz, St Stanislaus Kostka (q.v.) was born to Maximilian Kolbe (1894–1941), who died heroically in the concentration camp of Oświęcim; he founded in 1927–28 the City of the Immaculate (Niepokalanów), repeating his foundation in Japan in 1930–36. His beatification process is underway.

Pope Pius XI, by an apostolic letter of 23 August 1923, raised to the rank and dignity of a minor basilica the new church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, situated in the suburbs of the city (AAS, 15 [1923], pp. 583–84). For its history and art, see also POLAND. — See plate XCIV.
