ZUVIDOVIĆ, ANGELO. - Franciscan missionary, born in Vrbbosna, near present-day Sarajevo in Bosnia, in 1420, into a noble schismatic family which he himself, after his conversion following the preaching of St. James of the Marches, succeeded in bringing back into the Catholic fold.
A great preacher, he converted many heretical Patarenes and many schismatics to the Catholic faith. In 1463, at the fall of the Kingdom of Bosnia, he had the courage to present himself before the Turkish conqueror, Mehmed II, and from him obtained the *Ahd-name*, i.e., the high diploma of tolerance and protection for the Friars Minor and for the Catholic people entrusted to them. Thanks to this privilege, the Franciscans were able to preserve Catholicism in occupied Croatia and to evangelize other Balkan peoples subject to the Turks. Z. died c. 1498, and the fame of his holiness still endures among the people.
